Hi Shawn. Three unrelated questions:
- When calculating the effective length, is it practical for a scenario where two adjacent supports are not of the the same thickness (hence a1 not equal to a2) ?
- Does the concept of ‘overdesigning’ or ‘overreinforcement’ as we saw with bending apply to shear?
- What detailing manual would you recommend?
Thanks.
Hey @Jomo_Ndirangu
- a1 and a2 do not need to be the same - this is why there are two variables.
- Not really - when it comes to shear we’re most concerned with crushing of the inclined compression strut - so ‘over-designing’ is not really a concern.
- The IStructE publish an excellent reinforcement detailing manual.
